A monotype is a unique image or mark created on a plate using a fluid or gelled material. The result is a single image that drifts in the territory between printmaking and painting.
Using our Pigment Sticks to paint, draw, or mark make on a Plexiglass plate images transfer with ease onto paper. The consistency of the sticks are firm enough so that even application with a brayer is easy to achieve, but soft enough so that prints can be taken with minimal pressure eliminating the need to use a press. Encaustic paint will be a second option for printing material. Students will learn to control the temperature of the heated palette to create clear and highly saturated imagery.
This class covers monotype-printing basics including image and mark making methods on the plate surface, recommended tools and printing without a press. We will also discuss surface preparation, since Pigment Sticks are an oil paint it is necessary to prep your paper for longevity. The approach in this class allows for a balance of control and spontaneity with immediate results making it possible to create a number of prints in a short amount of time.
As an art educator, Kelly has been invited to present and teach at the International Encaustic Conference, the Loomis Chaffee School, and Women's Studio Workshop. An emerging artist, her work was featured in the 2009 Kingston Sculpture Biennial, and she has completed several mural commissions. Kelly enjoys working with other artists to creatively problem solve, presenting group workshops and private instruction geared toward combining Encaustic and Pigment Sticks with sculptural methods. She earned her BFA in Sculpture from SUNY New Paltz in 2007. Kelly is currently a graduate student in the Art Education program at Hunter College in NYC.
