Delivery of Work

Keeping with Tradition is an exhibition series based on centuries-old quilting traditions. This exhibit will not be juried. There is a modest fee of $15 for nonmembers/ $10 for members of View. The fee allows for the submission of up to 3 works per artist.

Churn Dash is a very old quilt block pattern originating between 1800 and 1849. The name apparently is derived from its resemblance to a butter churn (the rectangle and triangle perimeter of the block) and the “butter dash” /stick of the center of the block. Hole in the Barn Door is one of many other names this design is known by.

It is a simple 9-patch with just a few elements – triangles, rectangles and a square - and is often used as an introductory design for beginning quilters. But in spite of its simplicity, it offers challenges to more experienced quilters with changes of fabrics and colors and transformation or even distortion of the design.  Use your imagination, but the basic design must be recognizable in the quilt.
