This concert, recorded in December 2020 and January 2021 at View in Old Forge on the their Steinway piano, features the incredible pianist Nicole Wang, who has been social distancing in the Adirondacks since March 2020. The video also features Nicole’s rescue robin, Ali, who accompanies her.
The program includes excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” along with selections by Chopin, Mozart, and other composers. Some of the pieces feature sections that Nicole herself arranged. About Nicole Wang
Nicole Wang was born in Chendu, China. Unlike many other musicians, she was not born into a musical family. Her Father was a scientist, and her Mother was a nurse. At age six she won the First Prize of China National Piano Competition for Young Artist, and performed in the Concert Hall of Chendu Theatre where it was nationally broadcast live. In that year, she won three other piano competitions and performed in various cities including Beijing, Chongjing, Chendu, etc. The music critic of Sichuan News described her as a prodigy at the piano with brilliant facility, compelling musicality and a depth of emotion far beyond her years.
In 1992 Ms. Wang immigrated to the United States and became a pupil of the distinguished Hungarian concert pianist, Bela Siki, who studied with legendary pianists Leo Weiner, Dinu Lipatti and Ernst von Dohnanyi. From 1992 through 1996 her awards include First Prize in the Dorothy A. Anderson International Piano Competition, the Director’s Award for the Outstanding Performance of Scarlatti Sonatas, and four consecutive First Prize Awards in Helen Crowe Snelling Memorial Piano Competition.
In 2002, Ms. Wang received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Professor Phillip Kawin. Her awards include the Grand Prize of Chiang Wen-Yeh International Piano Competition, where she performed in the Kennedy Center, First Prize in the Greenwich Symphony Scholarship Competition, First Prize in the Warminster Symphony Competition, and First Prize in the Pottstown Symphony Competition.
In 2004, Ms. Wang graduated with a Master Degree in Music of Piano Performance from Temple University, where she studied with the distinguished pedagogue and concert artist, Alexander Fiorillo, who is one of the few pianists that studied with Vladimir Horowitz. Awards include First Prize in the Hershey Symphony Competition, awards in the 22nd Bartok-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev International Piano Competition & Festival, and First Prize in the Keystone State Piano Competition. In 2004, she was invited to perform at the Radio Station of Philadelphia for the Peace Piano World Tour Convention sponsored by Jacob Music and Steinway and Sons.
Nicole has appeared as the guest soloist with several orchestras in the east-coast, and has been appreciated by audience throughout United States. She maintains a very active performing schedule performing at various venues such as Temple University, Manhattan School of Music, Rydal Park, Logan Square, Spring House, Spring Field, Fort Washington Estate, Masonic Home, Meadow Wood, and Country House Club.
About Ali
Here is a little about my bird. I found him or he came to me by fate, he was only a little over a week old, American robin. He had some injuries, I took him in and hand reared him. Named him Alexander , but Ali for short. and he never left me, even though I let him outside all the time, he never left. He bonded with me on day one. He loves music, playing games with me, singing. He is super intelligent, and very sweet. The funny thing is that he doesn't even think he is a bird. He thinks he is partial human ;) He goes to all of my concerts, and people really love that !
