Instructor: Linda Scherz
The Adirondack Pack Basket is one of the most recognized objects associated with the Adirondacks. This will be a day of weaving ending with a great pack ready for your day hike or canoe trip. Create your own pack basket patterned from the traditional Adirondack Pack Baskets. Adults and children can wear this pack.
Students weave a plain weave base with the pre-cut spokes. Then learn to continuous weave the sides of the basket, pack tight, level the top, weave false rim, cut and tuck spokes, insert the hand carved hardwood handle, fit the rim and lash on basket. Lastly, add an adjustable webbing or leather harness secured with skids.
This class will be fun for all weavers. This is a great intro size pack to making pack baskets. Linda will demonstrate, teach you weaving techniques and guide you while you weave your basket.
Instructor will bring all materials to make the basket and tools students will need during class. As Linda makes all the leather and webbing harnesses please let registrar know your choice of harness.
Students should wear comfortable clothing. Students will be using a drawknife and other sharp tools. Note: Baskets will not be stained during class.
Basket dimensions: 6” x 9” x 14”H
Linda started weaving baskets in the fall 1987 shortly after moving to Northern NY. Her interest in weaving quickly expanded to designing, teaching, exhibitions and juried shows. Linda enjoys working with a variety of materials, including reed, bark that she harvests, waxed linen, beads and other materials. While much was self-taught, she has attended conferences to learn other techniques and to work with other materials. Known for her intricate patterns, eye for color and incorporating different materials in her designs keeps it exciting for her. Through the years she has won several awards for her baskets. In 2013 and 2015 two of her baskets, Sagandaga and Radiance were in the NBO Biennial Juried Exhibition. Her Hiker Adirondack Pack Basket was in the December 2017 issue of Martha Stewart Living Magazine. Linda teaches her designs throughout the United States for various guilds, conferences, art centers and organizations. She enjoys sharing her basketry knowledge and experience with her students as it’s rewarding to see their progress and excitement with what they have learned and made.
