Mending Embroidery ZOOM Workshop

April 14 - April 28, 2020

Instructor: Niki English

Learn from home in this three-session workshop!

Join instructor Niki English for a Zoom video workshop where you'll learn the art of Shashiko, a pre-industrial Japanese technique of mending garments with beautiful and artful stitches. When fabric was scarce, garments were mended for longer life, and the mending highlighted the wear and beauty of the piece while adding to it's character, longevity, and strength.

We will learn the basic stitch for Shashiko, as well as how to create a geometric pattern, transfer a pattern to fabric, and how to adapt the pattern to the specific repair. The contours of the damage allow us to re-invent the garment into something better than it was before.

Students, you'll be working on a garment of your own, - even if it is not damaged, we can add stitches to a pocket, or highlight features of the garment in some way.

IMPORTANT: There are two choices. You can have a kit of the necessary materials and tools shipped to you, or you can use a provided materials list (sent to you after registration) to find your own. Please select the appropriate choice when you register.
