Shibori Scarf Zoom Workshop

June 23 - July 7, 2020

Instructor: Niki English

We will create a uniquely designed bandana or scarf using the natural dye and spice, Tumeric.

Shibori is a Japanese technique using folding, twisting, and binding to create a resist against the dye, leaving a design in the dyed fabric - similar to tye-dye, but with a rhythmic or intentional pattern. We will learn various techniques using found objects, cord, clothes pins, and other objects to create one-of-a-kind designs and learn natural dyeing methods.

No experience necessary, all ages welcome.

Materials Needed:
  • Scarf, Bandana, pashmina, or fabric swatch to dye (at leaste 12"x12") - needs to be natural fabric in a light color. The shade of the original fabric will affect the outcome of the dye. The fabric should be 100% or a blend of: cotton, silk, or linen. Do not purchase any blends with man-made materials such as nylon, polyester, acrylic, as this will not hold the dye.
  • 1 Gallon white vinegar
  • at least 1/2 cup of Tumeric
  • rubber bands, clothes pins, binder clips, clamps, cotton cord, small objects such as marbles, coins, buttons, etc (any combination of these for various techniques)
  • Large pot
  • Additionally, a Stainless steel or Aluminum stock pot
  • Sink for rinsing
  • Rubber gloves
