This is a great class for beginners who have always wanted to try making pottery on the wheel. Students will discover the fundamentals of creating basic cylindrical shapes. Instructor Kristin Martin will go over simple techniques that will include centering, opening up the clay, raising the wall, shaping, as well as finishing and trimming a pot. Emphasis will be placed on practicing controlling the clay, becoming familiar with the step by step motions, and being comfortable using the wheel.
Different types of clay stages, characteristics, and properties will be explained. This will include identifying the various states of the clay throughout the creating process and how it applies to throwing forms on the wheel.
Students will receive a review of equipment and tools, as well as an overview of etiquette and procedures of working in a community studio. Please bring your own apron/smock.
