More about Raku
Raku ware was the original type of pottery used for the Japanese Tea ceremony. Raku means “Comfort” and derives its name from a 16th century palace in Kyoto Japan, the Jurakudai.
Raku has evolved many times since its development in feudal Japan. In the US and Europe it is loved for the excitement and immediacy of the process. The pot is rapidly fired to about 1800 degrees, removed from the kiln red hot and put into a reduction chamber [usually a trash can full of sawdust] for about 20 minutes. The heavy and quick reduction produces dramatic effects on the pot and glaze. Each ceramic piece is one of a kind!
