How do you say thank you to a world leader? Cathy Bertini was admired by Kofi Annan head of the United Nations, and Melinda Gates from the Gates Foundation, and who also was nominated by two presidents to head the World Food Program. She was named the World Food Prize Laureate in 2003 for her transformational work, and recently the WFP received the Nobel Peace Prize.
“The quilting bee belongs to a venerable tradition dating back as many centuries as women have gathered to carry out domestic tasks. But how do you hold a quilting bee when the participants are in 80 countries around the world.” From the World Food Program, Goodbye Quilt Project
The staff at the World Food Program wanted to show significant appreciation for Catherine Bertini’s leadership for her many years as head of the World Food Program and for her promotion of women and children in food policies across the world.
Thus the creation of the Goodbye Quilt. From Mozambique, to Bangkok, to Yokohama, women created unique squares representing 71 countries. The quilt was joyously presented to Cathy and has a special place in her office. It is a spectacular representation of the language of quilts across many countries.
