From Plein Air to Still Life: Watercolors by Mary P. Murphy

March 16 - May 20, 2018

Mary P. Murphy has a studio in Barneveld, New York, the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. The natural beauty of the surrounding landscape inspires many of her works, which have been described as having a “beautifully felt poetry” and “imaginative use of color” by Syracuse artist Barbara Kellogg. Her website is marypmurphy.com.

Murphy is a signature member of the Central New York Watercolor Society and has been recognized in regional shows with master status and awards. In 2014, she was chosen to videotape her first of two watercolor classes by the Craftsy Corporation where she has over 10,000 online students. In 2016 and 2017, she was chosen to be an artist in residence at Wiawaka on Lake George, New York.

After a successful career in corporate communications as a speechwriter, she is now dedicated to art full time. She is a popular art workshop leader and guest speaker, and has served on several boards of her local arts institutions.

Mary has pursued art all her life, though she did not do so professionally until she retired from her role as a speechwriter for the IBM Corporation in 2013. Even during her career at IBM, she pursued art as a hobby and won awards in the Tufts University sponsored art contest, “On Your Own Time.” Her work was selected in 1990 for the project’s national exhibition in Boston, Massachusetts.
