The Members’ Showcase highlights the work of outstanding local artists Doug Davis, Julie Edmonds Jones, and Greg Klein. They are accomplished painters known for their vivid landscapes, dynamic wildlife subjects, and expressive plein air pieces. Each artist is an active member of two lively painting communities in Old Forge: a winter painting group, the Mountain Air Polar Bears, and, starting in May, an outdoor plein air group, The Mountain Air Painters. Together, their work reflects a shared passion for capturing the beauty and spirit of the natural world in every season.

Doug Davis:
I consider myself to be an intuitive watercolor artist with guidance from spirit and my imagination. I especially like to paint flowers, landscapes, & skies. I also like to create scenes with stars, moons, and imaginary worlds. I am mostly self-taught, but I have learned so much from painting with the Mountain Air Painters and the Cazenovia Area Painters.
Julie Edmonds Jones:
I create paintings mostly using acrylics and oils, but also like to do pencil and ink drawings. Guessing landscapes are my favorite and I create the greatest amount from around the area or from memories and ideas in my head.
Mostly self-taught, my sister started teaching me when I was very young. I went into Graphic Design in college and took a few classes at Munson Williams Proctor more recently. I taught one class in Utica with about 10 students.
Some of my paintings were in restaurants and doctors’ offices while going to college in Connecticut 50 years ago. I moved back to central New York around 1980 and have lived here ever since. I stopped working on my artwork while raising my family, but my eldest son gave me a large gift certificate to an art supply store about 8 years ago. The next year my sons together gave me one to encourage me to begin again and I’ve continued ever since. Last year I joined a great group of people in the Mountain Air Painters and truly enjoy painting with them. There’s nothing like painting on scene. Trying to create paintings that people can feel as if they’re there and enjoy looking at them is my goal.
Greg Klein:
Greg has spent most of his life out West chasing beautiful scenes and tinkering with beakers full of dangerous potions. He is now located in the Adirondack Mountains, a land rich with mysterious landscapes and teaming with wildlife. By exploring the boundaries between abstraction and the natural world, Greg strives to provoke a deep emotion to draw the viewer in.
