Outdoor Adventures with Gary Lee - Vol. 387

There has been frost every morning for the last week and not much rain so be careful with any outdoor burning and don’t leave any campfire without putting your hand in the coals to make sure it is dead out. There have been a few fires here in the Adirondacks, all from campfires left burning or not put completely out. With the leaf cover dry like it is and a little wind a fire can cover a vast area in a brief time.

We did have some wind and rain when I was taking down my owl nets the other night and what a mess as they were full of beech leaves and burrs which took over an hour to remove the next day. I’m still catching owls each night, but I must stay up late and catch them mostly the last check at midnight now eleven o’clock. It was at that time last night as I got two owls when I went out to push up the nets. I see the end of a west coast football game and push up the nets. There were some extremely exciting games, both college and pro football, to watch and keep me awake. Many were won or lost on the last play before time ran out. Another night as I was pushing up the nets, I heard a vehicle come over the top of Limekiln hill at a high rate of speed. I could see the headlights as the leaves were off the trees and it just made the corner above my driveway as the tires screeched. It accelerated down the highway and did the same on the corner by the transfer station. It did stop at the corner and burned rubber headed toward town. I didn’t hear any crashes so I guess they may have made it to where they were going, only glad someone didn’t get in their way.

I just talked to my daughter in Florida, and they had seven inches of rain, and it was still raining as I could hear it on their tin roof as we were talking on the phone. Speaking of phones, I no longer have a land line as that was shut off on Saturday. I have everything now on AT&T since I can see the tower from my front porch. It has been working ok for the last few weeks, so I had the Frontier plug pulled.

I hope you all have voted or you go out to vote tomorrow and we will know how this turns out before this time next week, I hope. With all the things that are being tried to stop some from voting and others to get out the vote it should be interesting. We still have the right to vote!

Being out and about to several places this last week I found a couple of things that others never find. The first thing was a dropped deer horn from last fall which was right in my yard as I was blowing leaves. Luckily, someone didn’t run over it with one of their tires as it would have put big hole in their rubber. This is the fourth year in a row that I’ve found a drop on the property, and all were four points on a side, two down by my dam and the other under the bird feeders. There was a buck out just past the feeder’s eating beech nuts the other day, but I think he bites the big one as I heard two shots the next morning not far from the house. Then the next morning I heard just a single shot before it was legal light to shoot just up the road. Hunters are required to wear hunter orange or pink, it is the law. The other thing I found was a beaver tooth close to some beaver cuttings in the woods. That day ended with a beautiful sunset on Upper Browns Tract Pond.

Not many birds at the feeders yet lots of wild food out there but that’s another story. See ya.
