2018 Northeast National Pastel Exhibition

June 23 - July 29, 2018

View welcomes the return of a favorite from the past! The 2018 Northeast National Pastel Exhibition celebrates one of our most accessible and loved media-- the art of pastel—made by artists across the nation.

Pastels, pigmented sticks or crayons to apply color to a substrate, originated in the 15th century. In the 18th century, pastels were popularly used for portrait painting. James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Mary Cassatt used pastels to great painterly effect in the late 1880s to create evocative landscapes and intimate moments. The Society of Painters in Pastel was founded in 1883 in New York; the medium became popular across the country by the early 1900s.

The broad range of bright colors and effects achieved by skillful application have made pastel an enduring method for artistic expression.

Judges

Juror of Selection: Terri Ford
IAPS-Eminent Pastelist, PSA Master Pastelist,
PSWC & PSNM-Distinguished Pastelist

Terri a native Californian realized a deep connection with pastels in 1987 and has worked with them ever since, both in the studio and en plein air. Her paintings are representational, with some more impressionistic and others more realistic.

Terri’s pastel paintings have gained national and international recognition. She was awarded the title “Eminent Pastelist” by the International Association of Pastel Societies in 2012. She is a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America and a “Distinguished Pastelist” with the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and the Pastel Society of New Mexico.

She has won top awards in many exhibitions at venues that include the National Arts Club in New York, The Butler Fine Art Museum, The Triton Museum of Art, Then Haggin Museum and others. Her work was featured on the cover of Pastel Journal’s April 2012 issue, as Grand Prize Winner in their Annual Pastel 100 Competition and Cover feature Dec. 2006, and has appeared in many other art publications including Fine Art Connoisseur, American Art Collector, Plein Air Magazine, French art publication Pratique des Arts, and several “coffee table books”. Most recently she was featured in the french art book “40 Maitres de Pasteles”

Terri was the Guest of honour for the Art du Pastel France Giverny International Pastel Exhibition 2017.

Terri is a popular instructor both across the US and abroad and is asked to judge many exhibitions.

After nearly 30 years I am still in love with pastels. Although I have painted portraits and figurative subjects it is the landscape that is my most consistent subject. The light and conditions that are presented in the landscape are ever present and constantly changing. That keeps it exciting and inspiring. Luckily for artists there is no expectation to retire...just to continue to learn and grow with each experience.
