For more than 50 years, my family has vacationed for ten glorious days on the shore of Fourth Lake and its surrounding woods and mountains. Although the trip from my childhood home in Rome, NY was a short one, our arrival at camp marked a distinct transformation to freedom, exploration, relaxation and tradition while immersing ourselves in the beauty around us.
Now my extended family travels longer distances to reach our much anticipated end of summer destination. Over the years we have all delighted in expanding our time in and exposure to the broader Adirondack region throughout the seasons.
For me, our traditional ten day rental at the same place, on the same week with a growing group of family and friends remains the highlight. It is the extraordinary combination of fresh discovery and comforting familiarity that pulls us back year after year.
I hope these paintings reflect some of the joy this region has brought to me, and that they might also spark a bit of that feeling in the viewer.
