The Schoolyard Sugaring Maple Contest Photography Exhibit

May 14 - June 20, 2021

Call for 2

New York Agriculture in the Classroom (NYAITC) and View Center for Arts & Culture are excited to invite students, teachers, parents, communities, and the public to experience the photography of twenty-six New York student photographers and teachers in the “Schoolyard Sugaring Maple Contest Photography Exhibit” virtual exhibition opening on May 14, 2021 at 6pm via Facebook Live.

The event will kick-off at 6pm with the View Arts Board of Directors member, Donna Stoner and NYAITC Director Mrs. Katie Carpenter briefly addressing the value of art, maple syrup, and education. NYAITC Educator Jeremiah Best and View Arts Visual Arts Manager Heather Caufield will partner as they walk through the gallery showing and discussing students’ photography in the exhibit space. Select student and teacher photographers were chosen to participate in the exhibit by a jury associated with View Arts and NYAITC staff.

Each year New York Agriculture in the Classroom, and industry partner the New York State Maple Foundation, challenge students and teachers from around New York state to engage with maple production through project-based learning and standards-based teaching in the classroom. Through the spring participating students learn about and make maple syrup from tapping to bottling and all steps in between. The culminating outcome is for students and teachers to submit a sample of student/school made maple syrup and photography that captures student and teacher engagement with the maple process.

The 2021 top photographers are Samuel Habermehl (Habermehl Home School-Elementary Division), Ava Lillicock (Malone Middle School-Middle School Division), and Alison Gabel (Gabel Home School-High School Division).

The Schoolyard Sugaring Maple Contest Photography Exhibit will run from May 14 until June 20, 2021 and will display select student submissions from all 26 selected photographers.

The students included in the exhibition include A. Blacksmith, A. Gabel, A. Lillicock, C.  Ernenwein, X.  Coughlin, E.  Barker, E.  Mattison, E.  Smith, G. Alvardo, G. Wade, H.
